A bold and attractive brockage mint error on a large denomination
Lot 2234
Vespasian, 69-79. Dupondius (Orichalcum, 26 mm, 13.17 g, 12 h), brockage mint error, Lugdunum, 77-78. IMP CAES VESPASIAN AVG COS VIII P P Laureate head of Vespasian to right, small globe below point of neck. Rev. Incuse of obverse. BMC 828. Cohen 166. RIC 1210. A bold and attractive brockage mint error. Slightly rough and light deposits and with a small spot of corrosion on the reverse, otherwise, very fine.
Brockage mint errors are most commonly found on smaller denominations, particularly denarii. When they do appear on larger coins, the impression is typically shallow, as the greater volume of metal in the stuck coin within the reverse die makes a strong strike difficult. Consequently, a sharply defined and deeply struck brockage, such as seen on this Dupondius, is very rare
